Crane collapse in NYC kills two and injures six more people

The NYC crane collapse happened at the northwest corner of 91st and First at the constuction site of the 34-story Azure building with the top of the crane falling 25 stories onto a nearby apartment building.

The crane operator on top - there is also one at ground level - was killed and several construction workers on the site were injured by falling debris when the giant construction crane collapsed.

As you can see in the pictures, there is a huge gash in the upper floors of the building and one penthouse apartment was completely crushed.

Debris is strewn all over the intersection and New York City police found a metal beam from the crane collapse that apparently bounced and tumbled three blocks away.

New York Mayor Bloomberg says the accident is “unacceptable” and a construction worker told WABC 7 that a building inspector had checked out the site on Wednesday.

A complaint about the crane that collapsed this morning was filed May 20th, but the city inspector said everything was fine.
