The Red Sox brawl with the Tampa Bay Rays is based on bad blood between the teams that goes way beyond division rivals, with several dustups in the last few games finally boiling over into a full-fledged brawl.

The bench-clearing brawl in the second inning of Thursday night’s game began after Coco
Crisp got plonked in the hip by Shields, then dropped his bat, charged the mound, ducked a wild right by Shields, and then landed a rock-solid right to the Rays pitcher’s jaw.

Crisp then got buried by four Rays who sucker punched the Sox centerfielder while he was being held down, so this definitely is not the end of the Sox-Rays fight.

Shields, Crisp, and Rays DH Jonny Gomes were all ejected.

The Red Sox – Rays brawl can be traced back to comments made by Rays manager Joe Maddon after Wednesday night’s game, when he said Crisp “intentionally” tried hurt somebody after Coco slid hard into second baseman Akinori Iwamura.

Maddon followed that comment up with “I believe the players should take care of things on the field” and of course, the Red Sox Rays fight ensued in the second inning of the next game.
