Toxic Office Fridge – A hazmat team was called in to clean up a toxic fridge in an AT&T office that sent seven people to the hospital and sickened 28 more.

The toxic office fridge incident began Tuesday when an office worker decided to clean out a refrigerator full of rotten food and ended up creating a smell so noxious that it sent seven co-workers to the hospital and made many others ill.

Firefighters had to evacuate the AT&T building in downtown San Jose after the malodorous fumes prompted a 911 call.

Eventually a special hazmat team was called in to detoxify an unplugged refrigerator crammed with moldy food.

Authorities said an enterprising office worker had decided to clean it out, placing the moldy food in a nearby conference room while using two cleaning chemicals to scrub down the mess.

The toxic mixture of old lunches and disinfectant caused 28 people to need treatment for vomiting and nausea.

Authorities said the woman who cleaned the fridge didn’t need treatment at all — she can’t smell anything because of allergies.

And that’s the latest news on the toxic office fridge.
