Crop Circle Depicts Pi

June 18, 2008 News 16 Comments

Crop Circle Depicts Pi – A new crop circle in England depicts pi, an essential math formulation, accurately to ten decimal places in a huge crop circle near Barbury Castle, an Iron Age fort.

British crop circle depicts pi to ten decimal places

The crop circle depicts pi mystery was solved by astrophysicist Mike Reed who said it “clearly shows a coded image representing the first ten digits of PiĀ - the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter.”

“The tenth digit of pi in the crop circle at Banbury Castle has even been correctly rounded up. ‘The little dot near the centre is the decimal point. The code is based on ten angular segments, with the radial jumps being the indicator of each segment.”

No evidence of human construction was found at the Banbury Castle crop circle

After working out the sequence, Mr Reed produced the accompanying diagram. The image is an example of what is known as a fractal, or geometric pattern.

Fractals have been a staple of crop circle designs for many years, the most well known being the Mandelbrot Set or the Julia Set, which appeared 12 years ago in Avebury Trusloe, Wiltshire.

No evidence of human constuction was found at the Banbury Castle crop circle which measures 165 yards across and accurately depicts pi to ten decimal places.

And that’s the latest news on the crop circle depicts pi.

  3. [...] JREF, we don’t talk about crop circles very much. They’re still out there, in fact an interesting new one that depicts Pi was recently discovered. But ever since people started coming forward to admit that they’d created [...]

Pretend for a second that this was created by alien lifeforms. The fact that they counted the numbers correctly is not much of a surprise (assuming they too base their system on 10 digits), but the chance that they too would use an identical decimal point character is very, very slim. Sure, you could say that they studied our writing system in advance, but, c’mon… really? Point goes to humans.

I dont see why people have to be so skeptical. I mean how can you actually believe that in the vastness of our universe, that there is no other life out there? It is absolutely possible, and in my opinion true, that other planets out there are currently supporting extraterrestrial life. We can’t know exactly how advanced they are, but just because we don’t have the technology to visit planets outside of our solar system, doesn’t mean they don’t. Please people, try to be a little open-minded.

I am a skeptic. But I am also in awe of the vastness of the universe and am more than willing to believe in other life on other planets. I agree it is absolutely possible and actually hope that it is so. But as we skeptics like to say, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Crop circles were so bizarre when they were first discovered, alien artists were as likely as anything else. But now that hoax masters have come forward explaining their techniques, the question is reduced to “which is more likely?” Aliens COULD have rocketed here in faster-than-light-speed spacecraft to create crop art & then go hide. Or it could be humans that weren’t caught. Personally, I’ll look to SETI for a bit harder evidence while I try to keep an open mind.

  7. Paul Murray says:

This image is not a fractal, it has nothing to do with fractals, please do not use the word “fractal” as a synonym for “cool-looking and mathematical”.

By why don’t the aliens simply text us, if they want to send a message?

  8. Paul Murray says:

And for that matter, if Jesus loves me and died for my sins, why can’t he text me too, rather than leaving cryptic messages in scrolls written by ancient goatherds?

  9. “No evidence of human constuction was found at the Banbury Castle crop circle…”

What!? The Banbury Castle crop circle IS evidence of human construction.

  10. Astral Cowboy says:

I agree with the previous post regarding the use of the term “fractal”. As a quasi-expert on fractal/sacred geometry, I see no correlation here between this crop formation and fractals in general. People may become confused with this sort of misnomer.
