Milwaukee police have charged Walter E. Lewis, 47, with first-degree intentional homicide in the killings of Joyce Mims, 41, and Ouithreaun Stokes, 28, who were strangled a decade apart.

Additional murder charges are expected in six other cases where Lewis’s DNA has been found on the bodies of prostitutes who were found strangled in abandoned buildings.

Police said Ellis’ DNA was found on the bodies of nine women, ranging in age from 16 to 41. They were killed between 1986 and 2007 on the city’s north side.

Investigators believe eight of the women were prostitutes and one was a runaway.

Lewis is not currently considered a suspect in the case of murdered 16-year old runaway Jessica Payne, a white girl who was found with her throat slashed.
