Scott Kalitta Crash Video – Pics and video of Scott Kalitta killed in a fiery crash during a Funny Car drag race at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

The Scott Kalitta crash video is pretty horrific with the race car exploding on the race track and catching fire inside before smashing into a retaining wall at the end of the track.
Scott Kalitta’s car doesn’t slow down, and spectators at the track watched in horror as Kalitta’s car exploded, hit a sand trap, then vaulted over a protective catch fence.
Witnesses said Kalitta was speeding at an estimated 300 mph during the National Hot Rod Association Super Nationals when the engine of his Toyota Solara exploded in a ball of flames.

“The driver was killed after he lost control of his vehicle,” said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a spokesman for the State Police.
Scott Kalitta was killed at the same track where he started drag racing in 1982. HeĀ is survived by wife Kathy and sons Corey, 15, and Colin, 8.

Dont you think you could come up with something better than a cement wall at the end of the track. Maybe catch fence, water, 100 yds of sand.

Since Raceway Park @ Englishtown is essentially at sea level there’s alot air available so the guys take advantage of it and make alot’ of power with it. This makes the facility one of the fastest on the east coast. It is a GREAT track but the problem with an errant race car is that Pension road cuts off what could actually be additional shut down area. So the track following an abbreviated sand pit and catch net then terminates with a rigid guard rail. Beyond the guard rail there is a thin wooded area and a grade incline seperating it from Pension Road. We saw a very similar situation come up with Johnny West several years ago.
Jim Head was accurate when he said that these faciilities were built in the 1960s and 1970s, when the cars were going 200mph and that they are now capable of 330.
Perhaps there can be consideration given to some type of “dead-man’s” switch in the car that would mitigate a situation where the driver becomes incapacated behind the wheel during the run. This type of device is common in the Railroad industry. Also perhaps the crewchief can be given some power to activate (or de-activate) different systems in the car remotely, when too many things become awry during the pass. Or (of course) additional shut-down area at tracks like E’Town.
Pray for Scott and Eric, too many guys are getting killed doing this and the NHRA needs to address the issue!

To the family; as a fan and a IHRA Points Racer I understand and have great appreciation for what your family has done for this sport. There are no words that can describe what your family has given. For some of the people who are blaming the track, let us not forget, we choose to race, we know the tracks. Englishtown is not the only track that can’t hold the speed, this is why many drivers including myself, think we should shut off at the 1/8 mile break. Until all the tracks can hold 300 plus in the event of an accident like this, it is something that should be talked about more. A lot of these guys are blowing the tires off in the second 1/8th anyway, which is just as dangerous. NHRA lost a great racer, and from what I have heard a great man, my condolences go out to the entire family. John Storie, Asheville,N.C IHRA, GR577.

Wow,,what a sad ending in such a professional sport as drag racing. When i first read this and saw the video one of my first thoughts was how scared Scott must have been as he had to have pulled the parachute in the blaze but not slowing down….and the thoughts going through his mind….My condolances. Also great post by the 13yr old David…..Robert
