China Bans Eating Dogs And Cats – China plans to end thousands of years of culinary tradition with a ban on eating dogs and cats.

A new law in China against animal abuse calls for the country’s thousands of dog butchers and dog meat restaurants to be closed down.
Stiff fines will also be imposed on anybody caught eating dog or cat meat, according to a report in the Times of London.
The debate over eating dogs and cats has sparked fierce disagreements between the affluent, pet-owning middle classes and the far more numerous sticklers for traditional values.
Dog meat is a traditional winter dish and practitioners of Chinese medicine extol its health benefits.
Cat meat is less widely eaten—largely due to a superstition that holds the cat will return by night to seek vengeance—although it remains popular among the famously omnivorous residents of Guangdong province.
A worker at the Wan Family Dog Meat Restaurant in Guiyang, Guizhou province told reporters, “I hear a lot of people saying dog shouldn’t be eaten, but here in Guizhou, dog meat is a famous traditional dish. It’s a stew and very delicious.”

The anti animal cruelty law is an “expert advisory draft” from China Academy of Social Science and Law, and must be reviewed by the legislative body. How much of it will become legislative propposal remains to be seen.
Also, it does not ban dog/cat meat consumption, only regulation for cruelty and sanitation. The academy did consider regional culture and tradition when drafting this proposal.
BTW, if some Hindus think cows are God, should we not eat beef? Dog and cat are considered food animal in many culture around the world. Rabbit is pet in our society, yet we eat rabbits. If intelligence is the criteria pigs are smarter than cat, but pork chops are okay?
