Nuts Toxic To Dogs – Walnuts and macadamia nuts toxic to dogs and people should avoid giving human snacks to dogs as many other foods are toxic to dogs besides nuts.

Nuts toxic to dogs include macadamia nuts and walnuts, but other varieties should be avoided as well as the exact cause of the dog toxicity is unknown.
One type of human food that should not be fed to dogs and cats is nuts. Walnuts and macadamia nuts are especially toxic, with symptoms ranging from vomiting to paralysis to death.
Even small amounts of nuts are toxic to dogs with as few as six macadamia nuts triggering major symptoms. Within 12 hours of ingesting some of these nuts, dogs display an inability to walk or stand, vomiting, weakness and elevated heart rate.

If chocolate is eaten along with the nuts, the toxic effects on dogs are even worse and might lead to kidney failure. Acorns, which contain tannic acid, also are dangerous. They can cause ulceration of the mouth, esophagus and stomach, as well as renal failure.
Common signs of canine nut toxicity include muscle tremors, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, elevated heart and respiratory rates, and restlessness.

Our dog ate 12 oz of macadamia nuts last night and we didn’t think much of it. Today he has tremors, an inability to stand, esp in his hind legs, and increased and labored breathing. We brought him in to the Emergency Vet and were told he is at the low end of toxicity due to his large size–thank goodness–however he is quite affected. It was too late to induce vomiting (vomiting can be induced and charcoal administered)—and are monitoring him for the next 48 hours. Hopefully he won’t develop pancreatitis from the high amount of fat ingested—and we are hopeful that he won’t have kidney damage from the toxicity. We had no idea these nuts are so toxic to dogs–thank you for sharing this new with dog owners.
