Vince Weiguang Li stabbed and beheaded a total stranger, 22-year old Tim Mclean, who was sitting next to him just listening to his headphones and dozing on the bus.
In the video below, passengers describe fleeing in terror from the Greyhound bus outside Portage la Prairie as the deranged passenger suddenly stabbed the man sleeping next to him, decapitated him and waved the severed head at horrified witnesses standing outside.
The unprovoked assault left 34 men, women and children stranded on the shoulder of the Trans-Canada Highway about 60 miles west of Winnipeg, watching while the bus driver, a passenger and the driver of a passing truck shut the crazed attacker inside the bus with the mangled victim.
“He didn’t do anything to provoke the guy,” said Garnet Caton, 26, a passenger on the bus, which originated in Edmonton and was bound for Winnipeg. “The guy just took a knife out and stabbed him, started stabbing him like crazy and cut his head off.”
“Some people were puking, some people were crying, other people were in shock. . . . Everybody was running, screaming off the bus.”
Caton said Li was only on the bus for a brief time, after boarding in western Manitoba.
Another passenger, Cody Olmstead, 21, told reporters he had smoked a cigarette with Tim McLean earlier in the trip and that McLean boarded the bus in Edmonton on his way home to Winnipeg.
Caton told reprters that Vince Weiguang Li had changed seats to sit next to his victim just before the killing.
He said Vince Li seemed oblivious to others when the stabbing occurred, adding he was struck by how calm the man was.
“There was no rage or anything. He was like a robot, stabbing the guy,” he said.
Caton said he and other passengers prevented the attacker from getting off the blood-soaked bus by threatening him with makeshift weapons - a hammer and a crowbar.
“We were telling him, ‘Stay put, stay put, stay there, don’t try to come out.’ He tried to get the bus working and the bus driver disabled the bus somehow in the back. I’m not sure how he did it, and at that point, I think the police showed up,” he said.

Lets consider for a second the fact that 34 people are still ALIVE!! Granted it’s awful that that young man had to die and what a horrific death it was, but because they didn’t rush the psycho, they remained alive. There really wasn’t anything that could have been done to save Tim. So call them cowards or call them brave, imagine the massacre that could have happened if they hadn’t left the bus. I hope everyone considers the trauma involved in witnessing that and hope no one suffers more than they already have.

What a horrifying situation, and may his family find the strength to cope and deal with this in the best way they can.
It’s so sad to see what our world has become; people want to blame and they act with such hate. The killer was a sick, deranged person who does not have a place in this world.
This did not happen because he was of asian orient, this did not happen because the people on the bus acted “cowardly”, this happened because a man fell through the cracks of the mental health profession.
It’s really sad to see that people would call those on the bus cowards. There were children on the bus, most people on the bus were sleeping, and woke up to something right out of their worst nightmare. You cannot fault someone for their actions especially when you have not been in that situation nor were you there to judge. In most cases your body will take over for you, and you will go into fight or flight mode.
Show compassion for all of those who will carry this memory with them for life. Show compassion to a family who lost a son. Show compassion to the officers who will also carry these memories, they are only human and will also be scarred for life.
Enough with the hate and blame; you only make it worse and offend more people.
There is a person to blame and he will not receive the proper justice in this world for his crime… so hopefully there is a hell.

i have to say, i very rarely post comments, but i felt compelled to do so for this article. first and foremost, my thoughts are with Tim Mclean’s family and friends in their time of grief, as well the people on the bus who had to witness such a horrible occurance. but to say all Canadians are cowards or all Americans are dumb or idiotic - not very cool. I am American, and i have serious issues with alot of crap that Americans do, there are alot of idiotic people in this WORLD, and their nationality has nothing to do with it. and i don’t believe that Canadian or otherwise, in the situation they were in on the bus makes them cowards. any American -or otherwise- would have ran off the bus while witnessing the same, and it’s absurd to think anything else. they were in fear for their lives and the rest who were on the bus and got off the bus as quickly as possible. it is unfortunate that Tim was attacked in such a horrific manner, but the fact is, he was already dead by the time everyone realized what the hell was going on, and did what anyone else in that situation would have done, regardless of nationality, which was to get the hell off the bus. the passenger, bus driver and truck driver who kept the attacker secured inside the bus are absolute hero’s, as they kept the rest from being brutally, and possibly fatally attacked. it’s sad that people have to turn something this horrific into nationality bashing…we’re all human beings, and just because someone is American or Canadian or Chinese, for that matter, doesn’t mean crap…I know I would have ran my ass off the bus too, and i’m not a coward nor am i an idiot… to the Canadian’s who think that American’s are idiots, I am sorry that you feel the need to lump everyone in the same category, as I assure you there are many American’s who disagree with the same things the rest of the world disagree with when it comes to the decisons and actions of our government. and to the American’s who think that Canadian’s are cowards, how dare you…have you ever been in a situation like that to be able to call anyone a coward? I think the cowards are people who spend their time on computers posting crappy, ignorant and racist comments because they would never have the balls to show their ignorance to people who knew who they were.
This is obviously a case of temporary or permanent mental illness. If Mr. Li does not have a history of such illness, the Canadian police would be wise to investigate further and find out who gave (or slipped) him ecstacy. Tim Mclean had texted a friend earlier that people on the bus were taking ecstacy, which seems coincidental. If someone slipped drugs to Mr. Li without him knowing, that person is the real (if unintentional) person responsible for Tim’s death. Or perhaps Mr. Li took the drugs knowingly. At any rate, it would be ironic if Tim’s own text message lead police to the real cause of this tragedy. Hopefully the Canadian police investigate this further.

I agree with a quote in the local paper that covered the attack, the people on the bus aren’t cowards but i won’t laud them for bravery either..that we are conditioned by the law agencies not to interviene…granted some did and good for them…just remember this took place on a bus with a narrow aisle between the seats and not all the passengers could have rushed him without climbing over the seats and making targets of themselves….going in couple at a time in the aisle would also make a larger target of yourself and thanks to the government we do not have the option of carrying firearms like our American neighbours…if we did I’m sure that someone would have done something about the situation.
I don’t think all of us Canadians are cowards and neither are all Americans idiots and to generalize either way is not right and it’s easy to judge someone when you haven’t been in the same situation.

Vince Li Court Hearing
A man accused of beheading and cannibalising another passenger on a Greyhound bus in Canada shook his head and said “please kill me” when a judge asked him if he wanted a lawyer today.
Manitoba Provincial Court Judge Michel Chartier ordered Vince Weiguang Li to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Prosecutor Joyce Dalmyn, who argued for the evaluation, revealed new details about the attack, which occurred last Wednesday night.
She said Li, 40, had a plastic bag containing his victim’s ear, nose and part of a mouth in his pocket when officers arrested him.
The only response officers received from him was: ”’I have to stay on the bus forever’,” Dalmyn said.
Dalmyn also said the accused carried the victim’s severed head back and forth on the bus “taunting” officers.
Armed with a knife and a pair of scissors, he was also observed “cutting body parts from the victim and eating those body parts”, she said.
In an interview with police after his arrest, Li declined to speak for the most part, said Dalmyn. On four occasions, however, he did indicate in a low voice that he is guilty, she said.
Police are looking into information that Li may have spent as many as four days in a psychiatric facility prior to the attack, Dalmyn said.

To people out there making their judgments about the people on that bus. How dare you, and especially narrowing it down and calling Canadians cowards. You should educate yourself first on the differences between our two nations before you judge.
1.) We do not have the right to bare arms like citizens in the states do. Every Tom, Dick and Harry in Canada does NOT own a gun, and unless they enjoyed hunting… likely wouldn’t know how to operate one.
2.) Cowards? People are killed every day in the States, and people sit back and watch, or don’t get out of their cars and help, or don’t report their neighbours children being beaten or starved. Perfect is an illusion and don’t think for one second that America has it. There is a reason that so many Americans wear our Maple Leaf when they travel… it’s safer for YOU that way.

In response to ROB… first of all the people on the bus were probably terrified and their first reaction was to run. I don’t no what i would have done as I wasn’t there and have never experienced anything close to this in my life. HOWEVER there are no heroes here. Its simply a sad story! The best thing these passengers on the bus could have done is exactly what they did! Otherwise we would have had more people wounded. It doesn’t matter nor make a difference where this event took place. Crazy shit happens everywhere…even more so in the US. Look at 9/11… why did they all sit there in the plain and not do anything? They could have taken over the hijackers but in a stressful , pathetic situation all you want to do is stay as calm as you can and hope it will all be over soon. There are sick people out there, and we pass them everyday! All we can do is live with as much common sense, and caution as possible.

iam not even sure if that was tims head or just somthing he found off the net, now to put somthing like that on a site ike thsi weeather it is his head or not is weird, and i would guess is though up by a mind simular to Mr. Li’s and all of this about why didnt any one stopp him i would guess by the time any one relised wha was going on with a knife like that tim had no chance. Canadians try to keep perpetrators alive so we can figure out their motives.
In retrospect it appears this guy’s motive was to sustain himself since he was going to be on the bus forever. On a trip through the Candians prairies I cn see where that came from. He hadn’t eaten in a long time either. They say every man is only seven meals from a felony. He must have been starving, wondering if the interminable trip would end. I guess his mind filled in the blanks after having seen too many “survivor” shows. I doubt there is anything the health system could have done since you can’t fall through cracks without stepping on the floor in the first place. Vince will suffer more in life than he would in death. That’s why he wants to die.

Did anyone read that he could have been in a phyciatric ward 4 days prior to the killing!? I think unfortunately, he planned to do this to someone. What a sick fuck. I feel SO INCREDIBLY SAD for his family/friends. What a terrible thing. Everyone on this site should stop talking shit to each other and just pray for Tim and his family! This could have happened anywhere and to anyone! God bless everyone and Tim Maclean!

I think this is an awful tragedy for Tim Mclean and his family. I hope that Vince gets his in court and they find him guilty of what he did and sentences him death.

I don’t want to judge too harshly because you never know what you’ll do in such a situation. But, in the deepest part of me, I know I could never just sit and watch something like that happen! What has happened to the men of today? Are we such cowards that we sit by and wring our hands and run like little girls? It sickens me to know that this did not happen in a dark alley, but in the view of dozens of people. And not ONE of the men there had the balls to act like a man. Shame..shame..shame!

I can’t conjure any meaning to this senseless tragedy - moreover the bickering between Canadian’s and whoever else is above the typical reaction to such a horrific, unprovoked situation. Yes, people should step in to help someone in dire need, but the reality is - alot of people don’t. Let’s not pat ourself on the back for a hypothetical moment we weren’t involved in, and the “we would have done this”. Remember, there were four planes that went down in the U.S. and the losers that took control of the planes had box cutters. Not the same deal. The real heroes were the ones that landed the last one in the field, if you want to say who did what. In situations like these it is better to feel the love for the lost and not loathe those who did not know how to help. Stop the hate!

I personally feel that the video was in bad taste. I certainly have not watched it but given the descriptions I do not feel the need to. It just goes to show how desensitized we have all become. The next section of my response is directed mainly to Rob…..
As for Canadians being mostly french speaking cowards WOW I really didn’t think that people were that uneducated. It is actually only roughly 25% of Canadians that are primarily French speaking and where it is easy to say that you would willingly jump someone that was clearly mentaly ill when faced with the situation I’m sure the decision is not as easy. I work everyday with patients who are mentally ill and I can tell you right now that I would think twice about jumping someone in that situation. I would make sure everyone else was safe. Situations like the bus attack would unfold so quickly that the victim was probably already fatally injured by the time people had a chance to react. WHy make more victims?
I feel that statements that Canadians are cowards are counter productive and originate from other convulted political issues and take away from the dignity of the victim. This could have just as easily occured anywhere in the world with the same outcome. That being said the only person that blame should be assigned to is the attacker.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victim and the people who had to witness such a terrifying event. Despite the negative feedback none of you are cowards!

As far as the usa and canada debate goes this is my two cents. If you stuck a person from the North Dakota and a guy from Manitoba in a room and neither of them said were they were from you could not tell the difference. And i think it is wrong to blame people for what the government does. And i feel if the leaders call for war they should fight it out and not get the innocent to do there dirty work. But then again if you sign up for the army you know what your getting yourself into.
Now to the bus. I used to live in Brandon manitoba and i have family in Erickson Maniotba ( vincent stopped over there) i also personally know someone with Sychophrenia and if vincent has Sychophrenia it is a very horrible mental disease. If you know nothing about Sychophrenia look into it , and by the way ANYBODY can suffer from it, and pray to god you never get it
