Hydrogen Sulfide Suicide – A suicide by hydrogen sulfide gas by a Japanese teen also sickened 70 people in her apartment building after the 14-year old girl mixed cleaning products to commit suicide.

Hydrogen sulfide suicides are becoming common in Japan

This hydrogen sulfide suicide is the latest in wave of cuicides using the toxic hydrogen sulfide gas which is famous for it’s “rotten egg” smell.

Online forums in Japan provide instructions on committing suicide by using hydrogen sulfide gas made from simple household cleaning products.

In the latest suicide, the 14-year old girl mixed laundry detergent and toilet bowl cleaner to produce the noxious, yellowish gas.

Rescue workers summoned to the building after dozens became ill found a sign that said “Gas being emitted” on the door of the bathroom in her family’s apartment in Konan, according to the Kyodo News.

Gas masks are needed to avoid breathing the poisonous hydrogen sulfide gas

Her death is the latest in a spate of incidents in which people mixed detergent to produce hydrogen sulfide to kill themselves. Ten people have taken their own lives in cities including Tokyo and Osaka, but because other people were affected by the toxic gas, the total death toll from the cases is 14.

Hydrogen sulfide gas can be produced by mixing certain types of detergent with a particular type of bath powder, each of which are easily obtained.

Inhaling large amounts of the foul-smelling gas brings on headaches, dizziness, respiratory disorders and, in large enough amounts, loss of consciousness and death. The online forums in Japan tell suicidal people to capture the hydrogen sulfide fumes in plastic bags and then stick their heads in to ensure a quick death.

And that’s the latest news on hydrogen sulfide suicide.
