Dara Torres Surgery - Olympic swimmer Dara Torres underwent successful surgery on her right shoulder, the third shoulder surgery for the 41-year old swimming legend.

Olympic swimmer Dara Torres surgery repaired her AC joint

This Dara Torres surgery was a distal clavical resection of her right collarbone, or AC joint at the top of her shoulder.

The arthroscopic surgical procedure involves shaving down the ends of the bone and smoothing them out to remove calcification caused by arthritis.

Dara’s surgery was performed by Dr. Joseph Chalal of Performance Orthopedics inĀ Palm Beach, Florida, the same surgeon who operated on her previously in November, 2007.

Dara won two silver medals at the Beijing Olympics despite her injured shoulder

In the previous Torres shoulder surgery, Dara had a bone spur removed that had caused a partial rotator cuff tear.

Dara Torres said that while in Beijing she began having intense shoulder pain, so severe that she thought she might not be able to compete. Anti-inflammatories didn’t help, so she just swam through the pain.

Afterwards, surgery was the only option to relieve the pain.

“We basically removed the area of arthritis and create a space so she is no longer pinched off by the spurs,” said Chalal, describing Wednesday’s surgery, known to surgeons as a Mumford procedure. “There’s immediate relief after the surgery and recovery is quite quick.”
