Palin Earmarks Total $453 Million – The Wall Street Journal reported today that federal funding earmarks requested by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin total $453 million in 18 months, giving lie to her claim of being anti-earmarks.

WSJ goes on to point out that Palin, despite her claims of cutting earmarks, requested $980,000 per workday she has been in office, compared with roughly $893,000 per workday for Senator Obama.

This despite the fact that Alaska is an oil-rich state with no income tax and no sales tax, plus Alaska actually gives each resident $3,200 a year.

Yet Alaska is requesting federal funding earmarks of ten times as much per resident as Illinois does, despite much larger real needs in the State of Illiinois and a population 18 times larger than Alaska’s.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Palin’s earmarks are nothing but porkbarrel funding requests:

These projects include more than $130 million in federal funds that would benefit Alaska’s fishing industry and an additional $9 million to help Alaska oil companies. She also has sought $4.5 million to upgrade an airport on a Bering Sea island that has a year-round population of less than 100.

During an appearance Friday on ABC’s “The View,” Sen. McCain said Gov. Palin shared his views and and hasn’t sought congressional earmarks. “Not as governor she hasn’t,” he said.

In an interview with ABC News on Friday, Gov. Palin herself suggested she no longer seeks earmarks for her state. “The abuse of earmarks, it’s un-American, it’s undemocratic, and it’s not going to be accepted in a McCain-Palin administration. Earmark abuse will stop.”
