The average temperature from May 1 to 10 was the highest ever, breaking a record that has stood since 1804.
Meteorologists first started gathering precise daily data in 1772 and temperatures in the first part of May this year have been a startling eight degrees above the long-term average.
”It has been a record-breaking start to May. It has been the hottest daily mean temperature since 1772,” said Helen Chivers of the Met Office.
